Secret #1 - Eye Contact

  • Eye contact is not about staring at people in your audience. It’s about making each person in the audience feel that they are the focus of your undivided attention. How can you do this if you’re talking to a room full of people?

  • Look at one person for the entire time you spend talking about one specific thought - whether for a fraction of a second or up to several seconds. Keep your eyes focused on that one person until you’ve completed talking about that thought. Then and only then shift your gaze to another person.

  • Others sitting next to, in front of and behind that person will sense that you’re talking to them as well.

  • Move your eye contact to different parts of the room as you shift to the next idea or thought.

  • Focus your eyes on the “new” person until you complete your next thought. Then, move on.
